LVMH And Hermès Bring Relief To Luxury Sector

Europe’s luxury industry drew some comfort on Friday from Hermes’ (HRMS.PA) relatively encouraging 2009 outlook, and a positive trading update from LVMH (LVMH.PA).
The news from the world’s two biggest luxury groups by market value lifted the whole sector, battered in recent weeks by disappointing sales and growing evidence of restrained spending even among the ultra-rich.
Fresh figures from the pair showed upmarket handbags, shoes and other leather goods resisted consumer thriftiness better than jewellery, watches and certain spirits. Hermes said it aimed to keep 2009 sales relatively constant against 2008. Many analysts expect the global luxury market to fall about 10 …

Sofia Coppola Directs For Miss Dior Chérie L’eau

The celebrated American filmmaker directed her first-ever commercial for the launch of the new Miss Dior Chérie L’eau fragrance. The ebulliently happy short is an ode to Paris and to Monsieur Dior.
For the setting of the spot, Sofia Coppola drew inspiration from her very own Paris, bursting with freshness and optimism.
To embody the muse of Miss Dior Chérie L’eau, the director chose a young woman with a rebellious love of life, model Maryna Linchuck, whose personality resonates perfectly with the heroines of Virgin Suicides and Marie-Antoinette.
To underscore her insouciant beauty and sparkling charm, Christian Dior Artistic Director John Galliano, designed …

Louis Vuitton Pays Tribute To Multi-Dimensional Talent Stephen Sprouse

Louis Vuitton is paying tribute to the artist Stephen Sprouse, who passed away far too young in 2004, with two exceptional collections created in his honor. The leather goods maker is also joining the New York Deitch Project gallery for the first retrospective of Sprouse’s work.
Artist, music aficionado and designer, Stephen Sprouse defies capsule qualification, given his multi-dimensional talent. Fusing downtown New York street wear with uptown high fashion, he was a seminal force behind the rock-inspired futurist punk aesthetic of the 1980s.
The artist’s first collaboration with Louis Vuitton came in 2001 when Artistic Director Marc Jacobs invited him to …

Experts Predict Challenging Outlook For Luxury Goods In 2009

The luxury goods market is expected to see slowing growth this year and a possible downturn in 2009 as the global crisis and weaker consumer confidence hit the sector, experts said on Tuesday.
Analysts are expecting cracks to appear in the global luxury market, starting with the Christmas period when such companies make a large part of their annual revenues. Italian jeweler Bulgari was one of the first groups in Europe to warn last month that it expected Christmas sales to be poorer this year than last. According to a study by Bain & Co. presented at the Altagamma luxury goods …
