Yves Saint Laurent Auction Raises 4 Million Euros On First Day
A sale of belongings from the posh homes of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge so far has fetched four million euros (six million dollars), including costs, with two days of auction yet to go, Christie’s said Wednesday 18 November.
A total of 1,185 objects, most of them from the pair’s country hideaway on the Normandy coast, went under the hammer Tuesday 17 November in a four-day sale winding up Friday 20 November.
Christie’s had estimated the total value of the auction at between three to four million euros (4.5 to six million dollars), excluding costs.
But the magic of the name has sent prices to dizzying heights at times, one example Wednesday 18 November being the couple’s banal pots and pans — which sold for 15,000 euros though they were estimated to be worth 700 to 1,000 euros.
A flurry of bids for a quirky five-piece suite of furniture in antler worth 6,000 to 8,000 euros sent the final price flying to 169,000 euros.
