Sofia Coppola Directs For Miss Dior Chérie L’eau

16 March 2009

The celebrated American filmmaker directed her first-ever commercial for the launch of the new Miss Dior Chérie L’eau fragrance. The ebulliently happy short is an ode to Paris and to Monsieur Dior.

For the setting of the spot, Sofia Coppola drew inspiration from her very own Paris, bursting with freshness and optimism.

To embody the muse of Miss Dior Chérie L’eau, the director chose a young woman with a rebellious love of life, model Maryna Linchuck, whose personality resonates perfectly with the heroines of Virgin Suicides and Marie-Antoinette.

To underscore her insouciant beauty and sparkling charm, Christian Dior Artistic Director John Galliano, designed brightly-colored dresses with an impertinent vintage 60s spirit.

Sofia Coppola sends her young muse on a post-card like jaunt through Paris, taking in the Place de la Concorde, the Palais Royal gardens, the Latin Quarter, and of course, a stop at Dior Haute Couture salons.

Backed by an infectious soundtrack of Brigitte Bardot singing “Moi je joue”, the lovely Parisienne takes a deep smell of bouquets at a florist, enjoys some sweet delicacies at a pastry shop…and then takes flight after a kiss from a charming young man. Her trail is Miss Dior Chérie L’eau, a light version that is every bit as piquant and irreverent as the original fragrance.

For Dior’s in-house perfumer François Demachy, L’eau is above all about the persistent impression of delicious freshness. To achieve this feat he amplified the dry woods and gardenia, which bring transparency and lightness, retaining the patchouli and caramel for their suave and generous aspects.

With her poetic pastel-toned gem of a film, Sofia Coppola plunges us into a playful and resolutely joyful world, ideal to bring Miss Dior Chérie L’eau to life.
